Graves scores on a fumble return
|
The
Chillicothe Hornets built an early lead then held on through a
pass-happy Lafayette attack to beat the Irish for the first time
since 2009.
Lafayette, under a former wide receiver that was
converted to Quarterback after an injury last week to the
Lafayette starter kept him out of the game, completed 14 of 26
passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns. Lafayette threw one
interception, and had three completions fumbled away to
Chillicothe.
The Hornets scored on their opening drive when Cade
Snyder found Mason Hayward for a 45 yard pass play. Jack
Willard's PAT was good and the Hornets led 7-0 after just five
plays.
Chillicothe stopped Lafayette on the Irish first
possession, but a punt snap was low and through the punters
legs. Chillicothe Defensive Tackle Walker Graves scooped up the
loose ball and ran 15 yards into the end zone.
Lafayette responded with a 30 yard field goal on
their next series, and the Hornets took a 14-3 lead into
halftime.
While Lafayette spent the game putting on an
aerial show, their ground game was nonexistent thanks to a tough
Hornets run defense. The Irish had 29 carries for |
just 10 yards, with 13 of the
29 carries going for negative yardage.
Lafayette closed the game to 14-9 in the 3rd quarter on
a 14 yard pass, but Chillicothe responded in the 4th on a Kyle
Ross touchdown.
Wagner Chapman hit a 27 yard field goal in the 4th, but
Lafayette's first play from scrimmage following the kick off was
a 72 yard touchdown pass with 3:50 left to go. The Hornets held
the Irish on their last series of the game.
