In a rainy
game filled with untimely penalties and turnovers, it was a
simple extra point attempt that gave the Richmond Spartans a
38-37 win in overtime at Chillicothe.
After a disastrous first series by Richmond, the
Hornets scored on their first possession with Kyle Ross scoring
one of this four touchdowns on the night. Richmond scored on a
sweep around their left end that went 80 yards for a score. The
play was a hint of things to come for Chillicothe, which had
trouble at times stopping the big play.
Richmond scored twice in the second quarter to
lead 21-7 at half. The third quarter featured some of Richmond's
problems when the Hornets scored on their first drive of the
third quarter, then recovered a fumble and scored again two
minutes later to tie the score.
The teams each scored again when Chillicothe
started a 13 play drive that finished with a 21 yard Wagner
Chapman field goal for a 31-28 lead. Richmond had the Hornets
stopped on a 4th and 4 but bobbled the punt which was recovered
by the Hornets to keep the drive alive.
Chillicothe's difficulty with stopping the big play
surfaced again on Richmond's drive, which featured a 25 yard
pass, a 32 yard pass on a 4th and 26, and a 15 yard run that
ended with the runner pushed out of bounds at the 6 yard line
with 2 seconds left. A Richmond field goal sent the game to
overtime.
Richmond scored first and kicked the PAT, Chillicothe
scored but the extra point was wide left by inches. |
