The Chillicothe Hornets (7-9) lost 4-5 to the Trenton Bulldogs in a thrilling district team match in Trenton. The Hornets were the number three seed and Trenton number two. The Bulldogs had beaten the Hornets 7-2 in Chillicothe earlier this season. Seniors Dalton Rosenbach and Nick Malloy gave the Hornets some hope defeating Ockenfels and Houghton 9-7. The match was tied up 7-7, then Nick and Dalton broke serve followed by Dalton holding serve. With the consistent Tyler Maasdam and Bryce Larson providing their doubles win 8-4, the Hornets enjoyed a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Senior Jacob Henington had lost 2-8 to Davis in the previous meeting. Jacob had played three number one players Friday in the Benton tournament, so tough competition didn't concern him. Henington held on in the first set 7-5 and frustrated the talented Davis 6-2 in the second set. After losing the first set in a tie-breaker, Tyler Maasdam won the second set 6-0. Even though Tyler defeated Wyatt in a tie-breaker earlier this season, Tyler wanted no more of that, going on to win 6-7, 6-0, 6-1. As the lights came on, Nick Malloy was on center stage with the match on the line. Nick had defeated Houghton in the two previous meetings, both ending in a tie-breaker. The pair split sets and it seemed inevitable the match would end as before. Nick pulled ahead 5-3, only to have Creed Houghton pull it together at 5-5. Nick won the next game and had a match point at deuce (playing no-ad). Houghton won the point and played well in the tie-breaker to give Trenton the edge. All of the Hornets improved over the previous meeting and forced the Bulldogs to scrap for every point and win. The Hornets will play in individual districts Friday, May 12 in Excelsior Springs at 9:00 am.
