(Story by Coach Bob Long)
The Chillicothe Hornet Boys' Tennis Team (1-1) were
defeated by the Marshall Owls 4-5 Tuesday in Marshall. In
varsity doubles, Max Anderson and Jacob Henington lost to
Jalal Alhamzawi and Isaac Summers of Marshall 4-10. Dalton
Rosenbach and Nick Malloy lost 8-10 to William Raines and Zach
Baker. Hornets Tyler Maasdam and Bryce Larson won 10-7 over
Luke Jackson and Hunter Repp.
In singles, Max Anderson lost
1-10 to Alhamzawi, Jacob Henington went down 2-10 to Summers.
Sophomore Hornet Tyler Maasdam gave the team life taking an
early lead on Zach Baker, followed by senior Bryce Larson.
Larson won the first three games against Hunter Repp. Senior
Nick Malloy started last, but led throughout against Luke
Jackson. Nick eventually won 10-4. After a 9-9 tie, Tyler won
the final two games for a 11-9 victory. Bryce kept a one game
advantage until the end, when he extended his lead for a 10-7
win. Senior Dalton Rosenbach fought from behind against
Marshall's William Raines in the deciding match. Dalton
trailed 1-4, before closing the gap at 5-6. The senior Owl
began to play conservative and was able to secure the win for
Marshall with a 10-6 victory.
The Marshall team is extremely
talented and very well coached and provides appreciated stiff
competition before the Hornets move into conference play.
Marshall returned three varsity players (including their top
two) from the 18-1 quarterfinal team of 2016. Having lost 0-9
in 2016 and only returning one varsity player, the Hornets
Max and Jacob played two of the best players they will face
all season. Tyler and Bryce won tight matches. Nick won
convincingly and Dalton in defeat, forced his opponent to
change his tactics. The Hornets compete Friday, March 31 at
Excelsior Springs at 3:00 p.m. (rescheduled from Monday). The
Cameron Invitational Tournament has been rescheduled for
Friday, April 7.
