Richmond Spartans recovered a fumble and drove 5 yards for the
game winning score with 25 seconds left to beat Chillicothe
21-18 in the district semifinal game.
Chillicothe had problems with ball control much of the
night, losing 3 fumbles and 1 interception in the game. After
the interception stopped Chillicothe's first drive, the defense
forced Richmond to 3 and punt. The Hornets then on the 2nd play
of the drive found the end zone when Cade Snyder under pressure
rolled right and found Ty Figg on the sideline, who then
sprinted down field for an 84 yard pass play. The PAT missed by
The teams traded punts and Richmond drove to the 27
yard line on a 4th and 10 and tried for the end zone instead of
the field goal. The pass play was incomplete.
The Hornets were forced to 3 and punt. Richmond took
over at the 20 yard line and found the end zone on a 61 yard
pass play with the PAT good to lead 7-6, which would hold up the
rest of the 2nd quarter. Chillicothe attempted a 52 yard field
goal at the end of the 1st half but it was short and well wide
to the left.
Richmond expanded their lead on the first drive of the
2nd half on a 40 yard touchdown pass for a 14-6 lead.
Chillicothe fumbled the football on the kick off return, but the
Hornets kept Richmond out of the end zone on a great goal line
stand, thanks to 2 sacks by Kayde Burton and a flag on Richmond,
all inside the 20 yard line,
The Hornets took over at the 19 yard line and drove
down field to score on a 3 yard Cade Snyder keeper. The PAT
snap, in a "swinging gate" formation went over Snyder's head and
the PAT failed for a 14-12 Richmond lead
Hornets Kicker Jack Willard attempted a squib kick into
the wind. The kick bounced off the back of one of Richmond's
up-men and was recovered by the Hornets. Seven plays later
Chillicothe had the lead thanks to a Dean Adkins 3 yard run. The
conversion run came up one yard short
Richmond had a strong kick off return to the Hornets
46. on the 4th play of the drive Willard intercepted the Spartan
pass at the 17 yard line with 5:40 left in the game.
The Hornets went into their grind-it out ground game to
run out the clock, but on the 8th play, the ball popped out
under a pile up and was recovered at mid field by the Spartans.
With 1:42 left, Richmond used the short, sideline
passing game to work the clock and scored on a 2 yard run with
25 seconds left in the game. Chillicothe ran 4 pass plays but
were unable to get into possible field goal range.
