is the original recording of the Missouri State High School
Activities Association Class 2A 1988 Show-Me Bowl between the
Lexington Minutemen and the St Louis John Burroughs Bombers,
originally broadcast live on what was then known as KCAC Radio in
Lexington, MO 107.3 FM
These recordings were stored on cassette tapes for 29
years before being turned into a digital format. The original
broadcast was through a land-line (this WAS 1988!). The equipment
was simple, a rotary dial up phone, a small mic mixer and two
headsets, one new and one very old. After the initial phone call to
establish service, there was no way for the announcers and the
person back in the studio to communicate.
This game and the broadcast was filled with problems.
Our location was in the old press box on the campus of what was then
Southwest Missouri State University field (Now Missouri State
University). The Lexington fans were right in front of us and
extremely loud. Due to that, you can not understand our first
touchdown call due to the crowd noise
A torrential rain storm with lightening and
thunder halted the game for more than 30 minutes in the second
quarter. Unknown to us, the announcers, the storm knocked out our
phone line so we missed the second touchdown by Lexington.
Service was finally re-established but we lost
the phone connection several times the rest of the game.
This was my (Randy Dean) first year in sports and
my "expert commentary" was far from expert.
Despite all these problems, it was a heck of a
game and here it is in the entirety, including the original
commercials. Left click your mouse to listen, or right click your
mouse and download the game free of charge. I hope you enjoy!
