Benton Invitational - 1st
Chillicothe brought home
first place in the St Joseph Benton Invitational. Chillicothe
defeated Trenton 5-0, beat Excelsior Springs in the semi-finals 5-0
then downed top seed St Joseph LeBlond 4-1 to win the tournament.
Chillicothe's Ellyn Turner won the gold medal for #1
singles, Mollie Marcolla won the gold for #2 singles, Jaimie
Baker/Lily Pyrtle won silver for #1 doubles, Montana Vinson and
Meredith Brick won silver for #2 doubles and Madeline Brick and
Jessica Boyer won gold for #3 doubles.

Chillicothe's Jaimie
Baker and Lily Pyrtle won the doubles crown in the
Chillicothe Quad. Baker/Pyrtle beat Muff/Gray of Trenton
8-0, beat Flinn/Middleton of Kearney 8-0 and beat
Hazelrigg/Hazelrigg of LeBlond 8-0 for the championship. The
Team of Montana Vinson and Meredith Brick lost to
Hazelrigg/Hazelrigg 0-8 in the first round, beat
Bacon/Miller of Trenton in the second round then lost to
Flinn/Middleton 3-8 in the consolation semifinals.
In the singles competition, Ellyn Turner beat
Sarah Sanders of LeBlond 8-0, beat Jenna Wiersma of Kearney
8-3 in the semifinals but lost to Lane Hegarty of LeBlond
5-8 to finish 2nd. Molly Marcolla lost to Alyssa Dougan 3-8
in the first round then lost to Alex Massey of Kearney in
the 2nd round. |
Midland
Empire Conference Tournament
Chillicothe's #1 singles
player Ellyn Turner downed top seed Lane Hegarty of LeBlond to win
her fourth straight Midland Empire Conference Tennis Championship.
Turner became just the second Lady Hornet to be crowned a four time
Girls Conference champion. Jane Dickinson did the feat in 1989 -
1992.
Turner had a first round bye, beat Alexa Blum of
Benton in the quarterfinals, beat Rachel Kendal of Lafayette in the
semifinals then avenged a loss from the previous day by beating Lane
Hegarty of LeBlond 2-1 for the title.
Mollie Marcolla beat
Emily Pierson of Maryville in the
first round, lost to Hegarty in the quarterfinals, beat Maria Mercer
of Maryville in the consolation quarterfinals then lost to Emily
Funk of Cameron in the consolation semifinals.
In doubles competition, top seed Jaimie Baker and
Lily Pyrtle were upset by the team of Hazelrigg and Hazelrigg of
LeBlond to finish second. Baker/Pyrtle had beaten the Hazelrigg's
the previous day in the Chillicothe Quad. Baker and Pyrtle had a
first round bye, beat Sanders/Bridges of LeBlond in the
quarterfinals, beat Heim/Hollars of Benton in the semifinals before
losing the championship match.
Montana Vinson and Meredith Brick beat Walker/Assel
of Cameron, beat Constant/Comstock of LeBlond in the Quarterfinals,
lost to Hazelrigg/Hazelrigg of LeBlond in the semifinals then lost
to Heim/Hollars to finish 4th.

District Tournament - 1st
Chillicothe
won their 4th straight District Championship and their 8th
in ten years, placing first out of four teams. Chillicothe
will also sent three players to the state individual
tournament. Chillicothe's Ellyn Turner won her third
District championship and became just the second Lady
Hornets player to qualify for the state singles tournament
for the 4th straight year. Katelyn Barr of Grain Valley was
2nd. Chillicothe Doubles team of Jaimie Baker and Lily
Pyrtle became Chillicothe's first district championships
since 1997 and qualified for the state tournament for the
second straight year.
Mollie Marcolla placed 6th out of 24 entries in
singles and Montana Vinson/Meredith Brick placed in the top
8 out of 24 to earn team points and help win the team
championship.
Marshall was 2nd in the team standings, Grain
Valley 3rd and Higginsville 4th. Chillicothe will host
Higginsville in a regional match on Wednesday at 4:00pm at
Danner Park. The State Individual Tournaments will be in
Springfield October 24th and 25th.

Regionals
Chillicothe
had few problems picking up their regional play off win
over Higginsville 5-0. Ellyn Turner defeated Tricia
Goring, Jaimie Baker defeated Bueker, Montana Vinson
defeated Sara Wiley, Lily Pyrtle beat Lisa Chet and Mollie
Marcolla beat Emily Rolan, giving Chillicothe the
necessary five wins and the match. Meredith Brick was
leading her match with Laura Sappington when play was
halted.

State Team Tournament
Game, Set, Match: Chillicothe! The Chillicothe Lady Hornets
downed arch rival St Joseph LeBlond 5-3 to advance to the
state semi-finals for the first time in school history.
Earlier in the season, LeBlond handed Chillicothe their only
regular season loss to become Conference Champions and
Chillicothe returned the favor to win the Benton
Invitational. Chillicothe started the day with an easy 5-0
win over Kansas City St Pius X in sectional competition to
advance to the quarterfinal showdown with St Joseph LeBlond.
Chillicothe picked up wins from Ellyn Turner at #1
singles, Mollie Marcolla at #5 singles and Meredith Brick at
#6 singles. With the meet tied at 3, Meredith and Madeline
Brick
at #3 doubles lost their first set and were trailing in the
second set before coming back to win 7-5 and force a third
set, winning that one 6-0. Ellyn Turner and Montana
Vinson at #2 doubles won their first set 6-1 and came from
behind to win the second set 6-4 and give Chillicothe their
first team semi-final appearance in 14 tries in school
history. Jaimie Baker and Lily Pyrtle at #1 doubles were in
a third set when the Chillicothe won the fifth match up,
giving them the quarterfinal victory.
The Chillicothe Lady Hornets have finished 4th in the
MSHSAA Girls Team Tennis tournament. Chillicothe lost 5-0 in
the semi-finals and third place game to private schools. It
was Chillicothe's first appearance in the state semifinals
and they were the only public school in the final four.

State Individual Tournament
Chillicothe singles player Ellyn Turner and
doubles team of Jaimie Baker and Lily Pyrtle both finished 4th in
their state tournaments. Turner, a four year qualifier, beat Ann Kaczkowski of University City 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, beat Elle
Prewitt of Greenwood 6-5, 2-6 (10-4) in the Quarterfinals, lost to
eventual champion Alex Lehman of St Louis John Burroughs 0-6, 0-6 in
the semifinals and lost to Jean Ochs of Kirksville 2-6, 1-6 to
finish 4th in the state.
Chillicothe doubles team of Jaimie Baker and Lily
Pyrtle beat Marni Thomas/Arielle Sabio of St Louis Visitation
Academy 5-7, 7-5, (10-8) in the first round, beat Laura
Faulkner/Rebecca Mayus of Springfield Catholic 7-5, 6-3 in the
Quarterfinals, lost to Maddie Keller/Ali Patterson of Notre Dame de
Sion 0-6, 1-6 in the semifinals and lost to Christine Schafly/Lauren
DeRousse 2-6, 5-7 to finish 4th.

Post Season Awards
Parents, coaches and fans said
goodbye to arguably the best girls tennis team in Chillicothe school
history, at their annual banquet. The Lady Hornets went 10-1 on the
season, finished 2nd in conference, were district
champions and became the first tennis team in school history to
advance to the state team tournament, finishing fourth plus having
Ellyn Turner finish 4th in singles and Jaimie Baker and
Lily Pyrtle finish 4th in doubles in the state
tournament. Turner won the Coaches award. In her career, Turner
compiled a record of 82-32 at #1 singles, won four conference
titles, three district titles and qualified for the state individual
tournament all four years. Turner is one of seven seniors on this
year’s squad. |
