Chillicothe ---- 1
Marshall --- 4
Record: 8-11 overall, (3-4 MEC)
The Chillicothe Hornets soccer team traveled to
Marshall, MO to face the state-ranked Owls. The Owls entered the
match having only lost 2 games on the season. The Hornets pushed the
Owls to the end of the game, but came up short in a 4-1 Owl victory.
The Owls got on the scoreboard first with a lined shot
from the right side only 2 minutes into the match. The Owls then
made it 2-0 about 20 minutes into the game off a nice crossing pass
to the top of the box. However, the Hornet defense would start to
stiffen and make the night a little tougher on the Owls. The score
at halftime remained 2-0.
The second half started out strong for the Hornets with
a few nicely played balls to the outside of the Owl defense and a
few near misses. However, 13 minutes into the second half Connor
Ruoff was able to take a free kick from 40 yards out. He placed it
to the right of goal where Miles McLemore was there to head to the
ball across the goal into the left side of the net just beating the
attacking Owl keeper. The score remained 2-1 until there were 15
minutes left in the match when the Owls were able to break free and
get an open shot on goal. With 5 minutes remaining the Owls would
tack on the final score of the match.
The Hornets played well with illness keeping starting
defenseman Laine Saunders out the game. Solid efforts were put in by
Brice Griffin, Miles McLemore, Grant Peterson and Steven Cooper. The
entire defense played very well against a very talented Marshall
team.
This game ends the regular season for the Hornets. Next
match is the district semifinal against Lafayette at 11 am. All
district games are being played at Benton High School in St Joseph.
