9/10-11/10
- Smithville 27, at Chillicothe 20
Mother Nature helped out the Chillicothe Hornets, but not
quite enough for the Hornets to pull out a win in a 27-20 home
conference loss to Smithville 27-20.
Smithville moved the ball with ease in the first
quarter and a half, racking up 161 of their 288 total
offensive yards to build a 20-7 lead. Smithville had just
scored their third touchdown when the game was halted due to
lightening storms.
The game resumed at 5:00pm Saturday with the extra
point, which was blocked by Guy Vinson. Chillicothe used that
play as momentum to shut down the Warriors the remainder of
the half. Smithville running back Nick Nance had10 carries for
91 yards on Friday night, and finished Saturday with 23
carries for 158 yards.
Chillicothe found a spark on offense as they combined
hard gains by Fullback Nick Plummer with the outside speed of
Halfback Guy Vinson and timely passing from Quarterback Jacob
Lewis to score twice in the third quarter and tie the game at
20-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
A Smithville drive at the 35 stumbled at the
Chillicothe 23 yard line when a Warrior fumble was recovered
by Defensive Tackle Kyle Wilkinson. However, four plays later
Chillicothe gave the ball back when Smithville recovered a
Chillicothe fumble on the Hornets 34 yard line. Two plays
later Smithville took a 27-20 lead.
Chillicothe had their chance in the fourth quarter.
Following the kick off, the Hornets started on the 30 yard
line and put a drive together, but a fourth and 1 play on the
five yard line came up inches short.
After stopping Smithville the Hornets had one last
chance with 25 seconds left and the ball on their own 28 yard
line. They converted one first down but that was all.
The two teams finished with near identical statistics
on the night. Both teams are now 2-1 overall with Chillicothe
0-1 and Smithville 2-1 in Midland Empire Conference play.
