8/27/10
- Chillicothe 15, at Marshall 7
Chillicothe
used a strong defense to overcome 85 yards in penalties,
including 30 yards of offsetting flags, and two turnovers to
beat Marshall 15-7.
Both teams were their own worst enemies at times with
each team picking up a touchdown set up by a turnover.
After stopping Marshall's first series, Chillicothe
took over near midfield to drive 53 yards in 8 plays with a
Guy Vinson 15 yard run. The kick by Freshman Allen Kline was
just wide left.
Marshall's next two drives stalled thanks to a 10 yard
flag on 3rd and 3 that forced a punt, and on a lateral that
was tipped by Blake Stephens and turned into a 17 yard loss
also on third down.
Chillicothe was in a giving mood on their next
possession when they turned over the football on their own 13
yard line, setting up Marshall's only score on the very next
play.
Chillicothe put a drive together but two flags
turned a 1st and 10 into a 2nd and 30. After a punt, Marshall
ran two plays before ending the half.
Chillicothe's Fullback Nick Plummer came into the game
midway through the third quarter and turned into a difference
maker, picking up 76 yards in 15 carries in a quarter and a
half. Plummer scored on a four yard run on his 3rd carry of
the game. A conversion pass failed and Chillicothe led 12-7.
Chillicothe's final score was set up by a short punt by
Marshall. On the 10th play of the 34 yard drive with a 4th and
Goal on the 3 yard line, Chillicothe sent the field goal unit
into the game with 10 seconds left on the play clock. Despite
a rushed attempt that included a bad snap, Kline split the
uprights to seal the game for the Hornets.
