Kirksville spotted Chillicothe the first 17 points of the
game, then came storming back, but came up short to give the
Hornets a 38-28 hard fought win in hot conditions.
Chillicothe dominated the first quarter, running
19 plays to Kirksville's 7 plays. The Hornets scored on a Guy
Vinson 15 yard run in the opening drive, recovered a
Kirksville fumble on their first play of the game after the
receiver coughed up the football. That turned into a field
goal, then after forcing the Tigers three and out, scored on a
DJ Gannan 10 yard run to lead 17-0 at the end of the first
quarter.
Kirksville turned in their longest run of the
game when Harrison Dollins broke loose from the grasp of Kyle
Wilkison and rambled 71 yards down the sideline for their
first score. Dollins would end the night with 128 yards on 16
carries.
Chillicothe answered with a 65 yard drive in 11
plays that ended with Drew Wilkison finding the end zone from
5 yards out. Chillicothe took a 24-7 lead into the halftime
locker room.
Kirksville would storm back in the second half. After
punting on the opening drive of the third quarter, Chillicothe
lost a fumble on their own 23 yard line. Kirksville needed 8
plays to cover the distance, scoring on a 10 yard carry by
Fullback Parker Osborn (6-1, 215lbs) to close to with in 10
points.
The teams then started trading touchdowns. Chillicothe
on Wilkinson's second score on the night, then Dollins on a 6
yard run for the Tigers early in the 4th.
Chillicothe scored once more on a Connor Dixon 9 yard
run, but with 2:04 left Chillicothe again fumbled the football
on their own 47 yard line. Kirksville drove to the 9 yard line
where Dollins scored with 37 seconds left in the game.
Chillicothe stuck with the ground game, racking
up 352 yards on 57 carries. They attempted just 4 passes,
completing one. They also logged 21 first downs in the game.
Kirksville's passing attack was less than
effective, with two Quarterbacks going just 5 of 16 for 54
yards in the game. |
