9/23/11
- Benton 27, Chillicothe 10
Homecoming
The Chillicothe Hornets again struggled with turnovers and
penalties to lose their Homecoming game to St Joseph Benton 27
- 10. It marks the first time in 53 years that Chillicothe has
lost back-to-back Homecoming games. Chillicothe's defense gave
up two touchdowns in a three minute span to give Benton the
win. Two of Benton's touchdowns in the game were a result of
Hornet turnovers.
The Hornets took the opening kick off and drove
it down field before stalling out at the 12 yard line. A
Trevor Reger 29 yard field goal gave the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Benton responded with an 81 yard drive that ended
in a 25 yard run by Sophomore Dontae White. Benton had a big
play on a 3rd and 5 in the drive when Quarterback Trevor
Peters went to the air for a 32 yard pass play to Chris Young.
It was one of just two pass completions for Benton in a match
up of two grind it out teams.
Early in the second, the Hornets lost a fumble,
only to get the ball back 7 plays later when Connor Dixon
intercepted Trevor Peters and ran 75 yards to the end zone.
Unfortunately, a Hornet player pushed a Benton player in the
back at the 20 yard line, calling back the touchdown. Two
plays later, Benton picked off a Hornet pass in the end zone.
The pick led to a touchdown late in the half to give the
Cardinals a 12-3 halftime lead.
Chillicothe came storming back in the second half,
forcing Benton to three plays and punt. Chillicothe then went
65 yards to score on a one yard run by Quarterback Jacob
Lewis. The Hornets again held Benton to three and punt, and it
looked like the Hornets had things under control in the third
quarter.
The Hornets then started to self destruct, losing a
fumble at mid field two plays later. The defense rose to the
occasion one more time, forcing three and punt.
Getting the ball back on the 6 yard line, the Hornets
couldn't move the ball and punted on the 14 yard line. Benton
took over at the 43 and ran the ball 8 straight times into the
end zone.
On the first play after kick off, Chillicothe once
again fumbled the football on their own 11 yard line. Five
plays later Benton scored their final time to make the final
score 27-10.
A large crowd stayed after the game for the
crowning of Homecoming King Jacob Lewis and Queen Stephanie
Baldwin. |
