10/7/11
- at Lafayette 28, Chillicothe 16
Chillicothe had a balanced offensive attack, lost no fumbles,
threw no interceptions and had just 15 yards of penalties,
however in the end it was Lafayette's backfield speed and huge
offensive line that wore down the Hornets and gave Lafayette a
28-16 homecoming win in St Joseph.
Chillicothe started the game strong, holding Lafayette
to three downs and punt each of their first two possessions.
The Hornets turned that into a 39 yard Trevor Reger Field Goal
and a 25 yard DJ Gannan touchdown to lead 10-0 in the 1st
quarter. The Hornets were shaky at times in the game with
several fumbles, but each time recovering them to avoid the
turnover.
Lafayette put together a drive in the late 1st and
early 2nd quarter but Chillicothe held and forced the Irish to
punt after 12 plays, however Lafayette answered with a strong
defense and force the Hornets to punt. The Irish took over on
the Hornets 47 yard line and ran 6 running plays, using
D'Andre Talton on 5 of them including the 19 yard touchdown to
close the gap to 10-7.
Chillicothe put together a 7 play 71 yard drive to open
the second half that ended with a 42 yard pass from Tyler
Clampitt to Jacob Lewis, who made a spectacular run after the
catch to score. Chillicothe led 16-7 but the Hornets joy would
last a mere 14 seconds.
Following a Trevor Reger kick off into the end zone,
Lafayette's Quarterback D'Treal Stone took the snap, rolled
right and went 80 yards untouched into the end zone to close
the gap 16-14.
Chillicothe gained two first downs on the next
possession but lost yards on two straight plays. After an
incomplete pass the Hornets punted on a 4th and 15, down to
the 2 yard line.
Lafayette stuck to their punishing ground game,
going 98 yards in 11 plays, with 10 of the running plays, to
score on a 12 yard run. The Irish offensive line, averaging
252 pounds per man, starting to wear down the Hornets, who had
most of their linemen playing both ways.
Chillicothe, down 21-16 late in the game, lost
yardage on a 4th and 9 from their own 21 yard line, giving
Lafayette the ball on the Hornet 16 yard line with 2:08 left.
The Irish, apparently worried about a Hornet 2 minute drive,
scored in three plays with 45 seconds left to put the game
away.
Chillicothe used Sophomore Quarterback Tyler
Clampitt's arm in the final 45 seconds, going 3 of 4 for 36
yards before time ran out.
The Hornets finished with 129 yards rushing and
128 yards passing, while Lafayette had 387 yards rushing and
completed just one pass for 15 yards. The Irish had a long
punt return for touchdown called back when the Lafayette head
coach ran into the sideline official, and had a long touchdown
run called back when a Lafayette player had a vicious hit on a
Chillicothe player, but was flagged for block in the back. The
Irish also missed a 39 yard field goal in the fourth quarter. |
