- Chillicothe 21, at St Pius X 13
The Chillicothe Hornets used another solid night of rushing
the ball, and a bend but don't break defense to beat Kansas
City St Pius X 21-13 on the road and earn a spot in the Class
3 playoffs. The Hornets evened their record to 5-5 on the
season and 2-1 in district play, good for the 2nd place spot
in district.
Chillicothe's defense set the tone early in the game, allowing just
6 yards in the first three plays and forcing St Pius to punt.
After a Guy Vinson return to the Pius 47 yard line, the
Hornets used 8 straight running plays, all for positive
yardage, to find the end zone the first time. Junior Fullback
DJ Gannan punted in the final five yards on a third and four
play. The extra point was wide right to give the Hornets a 6-0
lead midway through the first quarter.
Chillicothe stepped up on defense on the next series,
holding St Pius to just 2 yards on a 4th and 4 from the CHS 24
yard line. After Chillicothe failed to make a first down, St
Pius again took over from the Hornet 45 yard line.
St Pius gained 9 on the first play then picked up 32
yards on a pass to Junior Jake Hamerle for a first and goal
from the 4. After a flag and three running plays, the Warriors
used a quarterback sneak from the 1 yard line on fourth down
to score. The extra point gave St Pius a 7-6 lead in the 2nd
quarter.
The Hornets wasted no time, returning the kick
off to the 29. Gannan picked up 13 and Guy Vinson 15 on the
first two plays, after two Austin Hatfield runs and a Tyler
Clampitt incompletion, Gannan broke loose for a 36 yard gallop
for his second score on the night. A pass from Clampitt to
Hatfield was good for the conversion to give the Hornets
a 14-6 lead that would hold up through the rest of the first
half. Chillicothe had a chance for more points late in the 2nd
quarter but a 5 yard flag and a 7 yard loss left them with a
38 yard missed field goal.
St Pius started the 2nd half in dramatic fashion,
recovering a Chillicothe fumble on the opening kick off. It
took them just four plays to go the 31 yards for the score
that came from a 23 yard pass from QB Grant Gavin to Phillip
Vutich. Austin Hatfield crashed through for a key block of the
extra point and Chillicothe led by one, 14-13.
Chillicothe refused to dwell on the negative.
Fueled by a loud and feisty Hornet crowd that was just a
couple yards from the sideline, Chillicothe marched 75 yards
in 10 running plays that ended with Guy Vinson sweeping left
end, spinning off tacklers and sprinting to the end zone. The
extra point was good to give Chillicothe a 21-13 lead.
St Pius wasn't done. A blocked Chillicothe punt
gave the Warriors the ball on the CHS 35 yard line, but the
defense held and a 36 yard field goal midway through the
fourth was no good by Pius.
After Chillicothe failed to make a 4th down, Pius took
over on the 50, marched to the 25 but the drive was halted
following an incompletion on 4th and 12 from the CHS 25 yard
line.
Taking over on the 25 with 3:49 left, Chillicothe used
their running game to milk out the clock, punting with 7
seconds left. Two St Pius incomplete passes gave Chillicothe the
win. The Hornets play at Richmond on Wednesday Nov 2nd at
