Chillicothe scored on the first play from scrimmage when Tyler
Clampitt (Jr) hit Zach Alperin (Jr) down the sidelines for a
59 yard touchdown pass in the first 15 seconds of the game.
Unfortunately, it was down hill after that.
Chillicothe was hit with penalties, a tough run
defense, turnovers and mounting injuries in a 26 - 6 loss at
Kirksville.
Kirksville was un-phased by the constant rain, nearly
100 yards in penalties and the early score. The Tigers
answered in a minute and a half on a 42 yard run by RB Scott
Schwend (Sr). The two point conversion was good.
Chillicothe had their chances in the first half but
back to back drives ended at the Kirksville seven yard line,
one on a missed field goal after driving to the 2 before a
penalty, and one on a lost fumble, one of four lost fumbles by
the Hornets on the night. Chillicothe also suffered a 74 yard
interception return for touchdown in the 3rd.
Kirksville QB Mitch Kriegshauser only completed 3 of 6
passes but two went for short touchdowns. It was the running
game of Schwend and the option running of Kriegshauser that
hurt the Hornets. The two had most of the team's 277 yards on
the ground.
Chillicothe was also hampered by injuries through out
the game. All players returned to the game except Junior RB/DB
DeEll Midgyett who was helped from the field in the 3rd
quarter and did not return. Midgyett had taken over starting
HB and DB duties after Walker Thomas left the Marshall game
with a separated shoulder. The extent of Midgyett's injury is
not yet known.
The Hornets fall to 0-2, marking the first time
the Hornets lost their first two games of the season since the
1984 season. |
