Chillicothe 14, Marshall 6
<Game Pictures>
Chillicothe scored on two big plays in the first half then
relied on their defense in the second half to beat
Marshall 14-6 in the season opener.
After forcing Marshall three and out to open the game,
Mason Hayward went off left side on the first offensive
play for Chillicothe and sprinted 74 yards to pay dirt.
Wagner Chapman's PAT made it 7-0.
Chillicothe scored again late in the first quarter when
Hayward found Aaron Baker on the right sideline for a
halfback pass then went 47 yards to the end zone. Chapman
again was good with the PAT for a 14-0 lead that held up
until halftime.
Marshall had their chances in the game. The Owls had a
fourth and one at the eight yard line but Matt Shaffer dropped
Quarterback Zach Maupin for a nine yard loss to end the
second
quarter scoring threat. Marshall also had a fourth and goal
at the 3 stopped by a sack by Shaffer and Kyle Ross, and a
fourth and goal at the 5 fail due to an incomplete pass in
the second half.
The Owls lone score came early in the fourth on a Maupin
one
yard plunge that was set up by a 28 yard pass to the one
yard line.
The game was far from perfect with Chillicothe losing
three fumbles, none of which led to any points and both
teams had penalty problems. The weather was also
factor with players on both sides fighting fatigue and
heat related problems. |
