Coach Bob Long Says:
The Chillicothe Hornets boys' tennis team (6-10) complete their 2018 season coming up short in individual district play. Junior Tyler Maasdam played a long three set match against 2017 district singles runner-up, Gabe Swann from Trenton. After winning the first set 6-1, Tyler played the final two-sets practically even, with Swann edging out the victory in both. Swann finished second once again to teammate Nick Shields. Junior Hornet Seth Batye defeated Vitaliy Tsytsyk from Cameron. Seth has now beaten Cameron's two, five (Tsytsyk), and six players on the season. Seth played Excelsior Springs number two player, Austin Clawson (#4 seed) next. Seth frustrated the talented senior, but was unable to get the win. Seth has played several good players on the season and has always rose to the occasion.
Junior Grahm Mayers and senior Gunnar Young won their first match over Dotson and Pitts from Excelsior Springs. After splitting the first two sets, the Hornet duo won the third set 6-0. Mayers and Young lost their second round match to the eventual doubles runner-up, McGraw and Boss from Richmond. Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton of Trenton won the doubles. Junior Matt Callen and sophomore Noah Crowe lost in three sets to Beasley and Helmich of Cameron. Seniors Gunnar Young and Michael Sandefer will be missed and the other fifteen players will return for the 2019 season.
