Lady Hornets Basketball
2/1/2018 Chillicothe 33, at Benton 27

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets used sound defense and just enough offense to send shock waves through the MEC with a 33-27 win over Benton in St Joseph.
It was a battle of defenses from the opening tip off. Benton jumped to an early 6-0 lead and Chillicothe's first and only point of the first quarter came on a free throw with 3:19 left in the first quarter.
Benton built an 11 point lead in the second quarter before Chillicothe game alive with a free throw and a Maddi Graham trey to trail 14-7 at the half.
It was another low scoring third quarter before Chillicothe hit a tray late in the third for a 4 point game. After a Benton Free Throw, Chillicothe hit a two point shot to make it a 3 point game.
At the end of the Third Quarter, Chillicothe's Defensive Specialist Catey Trout heaved a half court shot at the buzzer which missed, but she was fouled by Benton's Jayde Williams. While the other 9 girls left the floor to huddle with their coaches, Trout calmly hit all three free throws to tie the game after 3 quarter, a turning point in the game according to Chillicothe Coach Darren Smith.
It was more defensive battling as Chillicothe continued to gain confidence with every Benton missed shot and every Chillicothe rebound and steal. Sacrifices were many, led by Kennedie Kieffer sacrificing her self by taking three charges in the game.
Benton hit a free throw with 6:30 left and another with 4:01 left for a 2 point lead. Chillicothe's Kieffer hit a stick back from the low post to tie the game with 3:22 left to spark her team.
Hunter Keithley hit a free throw with 2:24 left followed by a Kieffer deuce and bonus free throw on a Benton foul for a three point play. Shortly after Chillicothe worked the ball back to Keithley at the top of the key. She caught the ball and immediately hit a trey for a 7 point lead.
The final thirty seconds was all free throws with the two teams trading back and forth with Chillicothe hitting the final four to get the win over the #2 ranked team in Class 4, St Joseph Benton.
The Lady Cardinals struggled shooting in their home gym all night, hitting 8 of 30 from inside the arc and 1 of 13 from behind the arch to unofficially go 9 of 43 from the floor.
