Chillicothe used a strong running game to beat St Joseph Benton
for the second time in as many weeks, this time in the first
round of the District Tournament 41-20
The Hornets started strong early, recovering a fumbled
opening kick off return. On the second offensive play, Isaak
Rasche ran it in from 34 yards out for the first touchdown in
the opening minute.
Chillicothe scored again in the first quarter on a
Dawson Wheeler 43 yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.
Benton put the next drive together to score early in
the second quarter. Then it was the Hornets turn to fumble the
kick off return. Benton scored 5 plays later to tie the score.
Benton's final drive of the 2nd quarter was four plays
with Chol Ater having a 21 yard run and scoring on a 39 yard run
for a 20-14 Benton lead at the half.
Chillicothe scored on the opening drive of the third
quarter on a Kam Ward 20 yard run. In a bizarre turn of events
in Benton's next drive, Benton had a 2nd and 4 at the 50 yard
line. They handed off to Chol Ater, whose jersey was grabbed by
a Chillicothe defender. the two played tug of war and when the
play was dead, Ater had lost 30 yards on his effort. After a 3
yard gain Benton tried to punt. The ball was snapped over the
punter's head, who retrieved the ball at the one yard line and
quickly kicked. It was fielded by Chillicothe as the 34 yard
line. The Hornets went on to score for a 29-20 lead.
Chillicothe scored again twice in the fourth quarter on
a Winder pass to Ward and a Ward run that was set up when Benton
fumbled. The ball was scooped up by Bradley Hayen who ran it
back 70 yards before bumped out of bounds at the 13 yard line.
Chillicothe's Colten Sewell intercepted Benton's
pass on their first play after kick off and the Hornets ran out
the clock
