Coach Bob Long Says:
The Chillicothe Hornets Girls' Tennis Team (12-2)
placed second as a team in the Midland Empire Conference to St Pius.
Senior Hornets Hunter Keithley and Hannah Zimmerman kept the St Pius
Warriors from sweeping the individual conference tournament. Keithley won
the doubles championship for the third straight season. Keithley and
teammate Zimmerman breezed through the first three rounds including a 6-0,
6-1 win against the St Pius number one doubles team of Aramas Pernice/Makayla
Carr. The Hornet duo lost the first set in the final versus Kintzil
Wagner/Megan Giffin of St Pius, but roared back for a 6-2 win in the
second set. Keithley and Zimmerman began the third set 4-1, by winning two
deuce games. After a comeback from St Pius, Hunter served out the match
6-4, with the help of two big overhead points by Zimmerman.
Junior Megan Sisson began her day defeating Mickayla
Johnson from Benton for the second time this season 8-2. Chillicothe
number five Sisson, faced St Pius number one, number one seed, and
eventual singles winner Maisis Markowitz. Megan fought hard, but lost 0-8.
In consolation play, Sisson played Lafayette's number two player Rowan
Davis. Despite a competitive effort, Megan lost 3-8.
Sophomore Leah Lourenco faced a tough draw. Hornet
number six Lourenco lost to Lafayette's number one player 2-8 in her first
match. Leah finished with the same score on the consolation side, losing
to LeBlond's number two player Peyton Netten. Leah played hard and was
competitive in both matches.
The doubles team of senior Macy Cavanah and junior
Delaney May was 9-2 on the season entering the tournament. The unseeded
team won 8-0 in their first round and faced the number two seed of Jocelyn
Kallauner and Megan Schussler of Savannah. The Hornets lost 8-9 (5-7) in a
heart-breaking defeat. In their consolation match, Cavanah and May faced
Benton's number one and two players, Kally Horn/Sydney Brown, who were the
number three seed. Down 0-4, the Hornets fought back, but lost 5-8 to the
eventual consolation winners.
St Pius junior Maisie Markowitz won the singles and
senior Warrior Leah Gehrke placed second. The Hornets compete in team
districts next week, facing the winner of Carrollton and Excelsior Springs
on Tuesday, October 8 at Daryl Danner Memorial Park.
