South Harrison 1, at Chillicothe 0

     The Chillicothe Lady Hornets allowed one run in the 5th inning, but that's all it took for South Harrison to beat Chillicothe 1-0 in the season opener at Danner Park. Chillicothe coach Stan Baldwin says it was a problem of not enough offense. "Our bats were cold and our pitching was fair. It's early and I know both will come along."
     Mallory Lowe suffered the loss, allowing five hits with seven walks and five strike outs. At the plate, Heather Doss had a triple, Carole Myers and Sally Baldwin both had singles. Chillicothe committed two errors and South Harrison one error.
 

Chillicothe 8, at St Joseph Lafayette 0

     The Chillicothe Lady Hornets scored three runs in the 1st inning and rolled on to an 8-0 win at St Joseph Lafayette. The Lady Hornets scored twice in the 2nd, twice in the 4th and once in the 6th inning. Coach Stan Baldwin was pleased with the win. "We were relaxed and we played a much better all-around game." On the mound, Mallory Lowe picked up the shut out win for the Lady Hornets, allowing four hits with two walks and five strike outs. The Lady Hornets top of the order provided much of the offensive punch. Lead off hitter Carole Myers went 3/3 with a walk. Mallory Lowe went 1/4, Heather Doss went 3/3 with a double and two RBIs, and Sally Baldwin went 1/3 with a walk and 3 RBIs.
 

Platte County 3, at Chillicothe 0

     Heather Doss accounted for the only Chillicothe hit as the Lady Hornets fell at home to the Platte County Lady Pirates 3-0. Coach Stan Baldwin stated the Platte County pitcher shut his team down. "Our defense was great and pitching was good but we just didn't hit." Mallory Lowe took the loss, allowing three earned runs off six hits with two walks and seven strike outs. Chillicothe falls to 1-2 on the season.

      
 

Putnam County Tournament 

     Chillicothe went 2-1 in the Putnam County Tournament on Saturday.
South Harrison 9, Chillicothe 3

     South Harrison scored three in the 4th and three in the 5th for their 2nd win this season over Chillicothe. Mallory Lowe allowed five earned runs off nine hits with three walks and eight strike outs. At the plate, Carole Myers went 2/3, Sally Baldwin 1/3 Chelsea Sturguess 2/3 with a double and Samantha Fender went 1/2. Coach Stan Baldwin says Chillicothe was their own worst enemy. "We made a couple of costly errors and a couple of mental errors that fueled the momentum for South Harrison." Chillicothe was credited with three errors in the game.
Chillicothe 5, Brookfield 1
    
Chillicothe scored one in the 1st and two in the 3rd and 5th for the win over Brookfield. Lowe allowed one earned run off six hits with three walks and four strike outs. Carole Myers went 2/3, Heather Doss 2/3, Mallory Lowe 2/3, Sally Baldwin 1/3 and Brooklyn Shearer 1/3 with a double.
Chillicothe 6, Clark County 1

      Chillicothe banged out 11 hits while scoring in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th innings. Lowe allowed one un-earned run, four hits, two walks and six strike outs. Carole Myers went 1/4, Sally Baldwin 2/3 with a double, Heather Doss 2/3 with a triple and double, Mallory Lowe 1/2, Chelsea Sturguess 1/1, Kelsey Hicks 1/3, Sara Matthew 2/2, and Brooklyn Shearer 1/2. Chillicothe is now 3-3 on the season.


Chillicothe 10, at Cameron 4

     Chillicothe exploded for 17 hits to down Cameron 10-4. Chillicothe scored two in the 1st, three in the 3rd, one in the 4th and four in the 7th. Mallory Lowe picked up the win, allowing three earned runs off six hits with five strike outs and four walks. At the plate, everyone picked up at least one hit. Carole Myers 3/5, Sally Baldwin 2/4, Heather Doss 1/3, Chelsea Sturguess 1/4, Mallory Lowe 1/4, Kelsey Hicks 3/5, Sara Matthew 3/5, Brooklyn Shearer 2/4 and Leanne Matthew 1/4.


at Chillicothe 16 Savannah 1 (5 Innings)

     Chillicothe's bats were hot again, collecting 15 hits to roll over Savannah 16-1 in 5 innings.. Chillicothe coach Stan Baldwin was impressed by his team. "We hit well.  Baldwin, Lowe and Mathew lead the way with Lowe also pitching well." Chillicothe scored four in the 1st and 2nd innings, one in the 3rd and seven in the 4th. Mallory Lowe allowed just one unearned run off two hits with a walk and four strike-outs. At the plate: Carole Myers 1/2, Sally Baldwin 3/4 with a triple, Heather Doss 1/3 with an RBI, Chelsea Sturguess 1/4 with two RBIs, Mallory Lowe 3/4 with a double and an RBI, Kelsey Hicks 2/2 with an RBI, Sara Mathew 3/3 with 3 RBIs and Bailey Keith 1/1 with 2 RBIs. Chillicothe is now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in M.E.C. play.

 

Stanberry Round Robin Tournament

     Chillicothe went 1-1 in a three-team round robin tournament at Stanberry.

It took Chillicothe extra innings to edge Stanberry 4-3 in eight innings. Chillicothe collected 10 hits, but Coach Stan Baldwin commented "They just weren't enough hits in a row." Mallory Lowe picked up the win allowing one earned run off five hits with one walk and five strike outs. At the plate, Carole Myers went 3/4, Sally Baldwin 2/4, Heather Doss 1/4 with an RBI, Mallory Lowe 1/4, Kelsey Hicks 1/4 with a double, Sara Mathew 1/4 with an RBI and Samantha Fender 1/4 with 2 RBIs.
Maryville 1 Chillicothe 0
    
Maryville scored the only run in the 4th inning to win a pitchers dual 1-0. Coach Stan Baldwin commented "We played a good game, only two mistakes were made: a walk in the 4th and a base running error in the 7th." Lowe took the loss, allowing one earned run off three hits with two walks. At the plate, Chillicothe had singles from Baldwin, Doss, Lowe and Chelsea Sturguess. Chillicothe is now 6-4.
 

Chillicothe 7, at Marceline 1

     Chillicothe scored four runs in the 2nd to beat Marceline on the road 7-1. Mallory Lowe picked up the win, pitching what Coach Stan Baldwin called her best game of the year. She allowed one earned run off five hits, with 11 strike-outs and no walks. At the plate, Carole Myers went 1/3, Heather Doss 1/3, Chelsea Sturguess 1/4, Kelsey Hicks 1/1, Sara Mathew 1/3 with a double and Leanne Mathew 1/2 with a double.
 

at Maryville 6, Chillicothe 2

     Chillicothe gave up 10 hits and lost at Maryville 6-2 to fall to 3-2 in M.E.C. play. Maryville scored one in the 1st and four in the 2nd before Chillicothe could get on the board with two in the 3rd. Maryville scored an insurance run in the 5th. Mallory Lowe suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs off 10 hits with two walks and three strike-outs. At the plate, Sally Baldwin had a triple, Sara Mathew a double, and singles from Chelsea Sturguess, Kelsey Hicks and Samantha Fender. Chillicothe's record now falls to 7-5 overall.

 

at Chillicothe 6, St Joseph Benton 2

     Strong defense helped Chillicothe to a 6-2 win over St Joseph Benton. The Lady Cardinals lit up Chillicothe for 12 hits but couldn't turn them into runs. "Our defense was awesome, they got us out of a lot of jams" said Lady Hornets coach Stan Baldwin. Mallory Lowe picked up the win, allowing two runs off 12 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Lowe helped her cause at the plate, going 3/3 with a double and an RBI. Heather Doss was 2/3 with a triple and an RBI, Carole Myers and Leanne Mathew both had singles. Mathew, Kelsey Hicks and Chelsea Sturguess had RBI's. Chillicothe stands at 8-5 overall and 4-2 in Midland Empire Conference play.
 

Chillicothe Tournament

    Chillicothe won their own Invitational Tournament, beating Brookfield 8-0 in the first round, beating Tina Avalon 7-0 in the semi-finals and beating Carrollton 4-0 for the Championship. Individual statistics were not available.
 

at Hamilton 7, Chillicothe 5

     Six errors were too much to for Chillicothe to overcome in a 7-5 lost at Hamilton. Hamilton scored twice in the 3rd, four times in the 5th and once in the 6th while Chillicothe scored three in the 5th and two in the 6th. Chillicothe coach Stan Baldwin put it simply: "Our defense fell apart, you can't win with 6 errors."

     Mallory Lowe took the loss allowing four earned runs off seven hits with three walks and one strike out. At the plate, Sally Baldwin went 2/4 with a double, Carole Myers 2/4, Chelsea Sturguess 1/3, Samantha Fender 1/3 and Leanne Mathew 1/3. Chillicothe falls to 11-6 on the season.
 

Smithville 5, at Chillicothe 0

     It was another case of too many errors and too few hits for the Chillicothe Lady Hornets, who were shut out at home by Smithville 5-0. Mallory Lowe allowed four earned runs off 10 hits with five walks and one error. The Lady Hornets committed three errors. At the plate, Lowe had a double and single, and Heather Doss a double for the only 3 hits of the game. Chillicothe drops their M.E.C. record to 4-3 and season record to 11-7.
 

at Chillicothe 10, Macon 0

     Chillicothe scored seven runs in the 5th inning to beat Macon 10-0 at Danner Park. Mallory Lowe picked up the two-hit shut out win with four strike outs and two walks; she also went 3/3 at the plate. Chelsea Sturguess was 2/3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Carole Myers 2/4, Sally Baldwin 1/3, Heather Doss 1/3, Lindy Scott 1/1 and Samantha Fender 1/2. Coach Stan Baldwin was pleased in all areas except one. "Lowe played a great game, 3-3 at bat and pitched very well. We had 11 hits but 3 errors, which are too many."

 

at Chillicothe 10, St Joseph LeBlond 0

     Another outstanding defensive effort helped Chillicothe shut out St Joseph LeBlond at home 10-0. "Our Defense played another outstanding game" stated Coach Stan Baldwin. "Lowe pitched a good game and our bats came alive. It was a great night for our Seniors on Senior Night." Mallory Lowe picked up the win, allowing three hits with two walks and three strike outs. At the plate, Sarah Mathew and Chelsea Sturguess had doubles, Carole Myers and Mallory Lowe had two singles each and one single each for Sally Baldwin, Heather Doss, Sara Mathew and Brooklyn Shearer. Chillicothe is now 13-7 on the season.

 

Chillicothe 4, at Trenton 3 11 innings

     Chillicothe scored two in the top of the 11th then held off Trenton to pick up a 4-3 win at Trenton in extra innings. Trenton scored in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extra innings. Mallory Lowe went the full 11 innings for Chillicothe to pick up the win, allowing three earned runs off six hits with one walk and seven strike outs. At the plate, Chelsea Sturguess had a double and a single, with singles from Carole Myers, Heather Doss, Mallory Lowe, Sara Mathew and Leanne Mathew. Chillicothe improves to 14-7 on the season.

 

District Tournament in St Joseph-1st Place

     Chillicothe had an opening round win over Savannah 12-1, scoring three in the first, seven in the third and two in the fourth. Savannah had one run off one hit and committed seven errors. Mallory Lowe picked up the five inning win allowing one un-earned run off one hit with four walks and four strike outs. At the plate, Carole Myers, Sara Mathew and Chelsea Sturguess all had two singles, Mallory Lowe and Samantha Fender both had one single.

     Chillicothe then benefited from a Mallory Lowe no-hitter to beat St Joseph Lafayette in the semi-finals 6-2. Lowe allowed two un-earned runs, but allowed no hits with five walks and five strike outs. "Our short game made the difference" remarked coach Stan Baldwin. "We moved runners around by bunting and even squeezed in a couple of runs." Mallory Lowe, Chelsea Sturguess and Samantha Fender all had two hits, while Carole Myers, Sally Baldwin, Sara Mathew and Leanne Mathew all had one hit.

     Chillicothe won their 3rd straight District Championship with a 6-4 win over St Joseph Benton. After a scoreless 1st inning, Benton scored three in the 2nd, but Chillicothe answered with three in the bottom of the 2nd thanks to a three run double with two outs. Benton scored in the 4th but Chillicothe responded with one in the 5th, then scored two in the sixth for the win. Benton was their own worst enemy at times, committing four errors in the championship game.
     Mallory Lowe picked up the win for the Lady Hornets, allowing four earned runs off five hits with four walks. At the plate, Leanne Mathew and Brooklyn Shearer had two singles, Sally Baldwin with a double and four RBIs, Chelsea Sturguess with a double and  Heather Doss, Mallory Lowe, Sara Mathew and Samantha Fender all had singles.

 

at Platte County 10, Chillicothe 8 Sectionals

     Platte County exploded for five runs in the 4th inning and ended Chillicothe's season 10-8. Platte County had a 4-3 lead heading into the 4th, and led 10-5 going into the 6th when Chillicothe scored three runs, but it wasn't enough. "Our girls never gave up" said Lady Hornets coach Stan Baldwin. "They played their heart out. It was a very good season."
     Mallory Lowe went the distance, allowing nine earned runs off 10 hits with two walks and two strike-outs. Lowe helped herself out at the plate, going 2/3 with three RBIs. Chelsea Sturguess went 3/4 with a double, Heather Doss with a double, and Carole Myers and Sara Mathew each had singles.

 

Post Season Honors
     Six Seniors who made their mark on the Chillicothe Softball program said their final goodbyes to their softball career at the annual Banquet. The Lady Hornets went 17-8 on the season and won their third consecutive district championship.
