We had 5 runners qualify for state this afternoon!
Cain Evans - 18th (Freshman)
Austin Lyford - 22nd (sophomore)
Yoo Jung Lee - 18th (freshman)
Juliann Gabrielson - 20th (junior)
Kadence Shipers 22nd (senior)
The girls ran REALLY well and missed qualifying as a
team by 1 point. That was a bit difficult, but it's a great reminder that
every second and every single place matters in the overall team rankings.
I have a feeling next year's seniors will use it as fuel in preparation
for the season! YJ & Juliann started strong in 18th and 20th and pretty
well kept that the entire race! Kadence had a rough start as she's
battling a lingering head cold (came through the 1mile mark in 29/30th)
but moved up to 25th by the 2mi mark and had a really strong 3rd mile,
gaining a few more places for 22nd. Alice Hurtgen didn't quite hit the top
30 to qualify, but at the 1mi mark she was in 42nd place, and that girl
ran a hard last 2 miles to finish in 33rd, just a few places from state
qualification. Although she's a sophomore, this is her 1st year running
with us, so I'm really excited to see what she does next season and am
very thankful to have her as a Chilli runner! I have to brag on Kaylynn
Cranmer, who spent the 1st half of the season nursing an injured hamstring
and had to step up to be our #5 scoring runner today. 10 days ago at MECs
she ran a 27:27 on this course (which is not flat at all) and today she
stepped it up, running a 25:50 in an attempt to try to get the team
through to state. I think her next season is going to be a really strong
one and I'm so excited to see what she accomplishes!
On the boys side, as a team they finished 8th out of 14
full teams. Both Austin and Cain also spent the last 2 miles slowing
passing to get into state. At the 1mi Cain was in 30th and Austin
35th....They both moved up quite a bit, but felt the field as a whole had
a very fast 1st mile. Clayton Savage knew he had to get out fast and stay
fast to qualify and decided to go for it. He came through the 1mi mark
with Cain, but slowly was unable to hold pace as the race went on. He knew
he started too fast, but when you know that's your shot at getting through
to state, nobody can really blame him for going for it. I'm proud of him
for giving it his all and can't wait to see what he does next season as a
senior leader for the boys!
So very excited to have 5 runners qualify individually,
3 of which will get to experience State XC for the 1st time ever! We look
forward to spending next weekend on the beautiful Gans Creek Course in
Columbia, MO! Boys will run at 1:30 and girls at 2:15 on Saturday, Nov
6th!
