Story by Coach
Chambers
After having a gap in their schedule this season,
the CHS girls' tennis team added a new dual against the Boonville
lady pirates on Tuesday night. While it is a bit of a drive to
compete against them, both coaches thought the match-up was very
worthwhile since both schools are similarly-sized, rural
communities. It was a very fair, even match-up all even.
The night started off slow again for the lady
hornets, like the night before in Kirksville, with the team dropping
two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Gatson & Mathews remained
consistent in their head-to-head, though, helping the team go into
singles' play 1-2. From there, the entire team really turned it on
in singles, winning the four necessary matches to secure the team
win 5-4. That session began with senior Summer Gatson rising to the
challenge to secure a quick, dominant win at the #3 slot. Then, #4
senior Rian Mathews did the same, winning her match in straight
games with very deep, precise hitting. From there, #1 sophomore Lexy
Smith fought long and hard to edge out her top competitor with long
rallies for an hour, and #2 junior Lydia Bonderer won quickly and
dominantly in her singles match with patient play. On the #5 and #6
courts, senior Trixie Leppin and junior Anya Moore battled well over
an hour in incredibly close matches with come-from-behind surges,
but both came up just a hair short in the final scores.
Coach Chambers was excited to see every player
competing at their greatest potential Tuesday night, especially in
singles. All the big tournament play early in the season is starting
to show in experience and determination.
Results were as follows:
#1 Doubles Lexy Smith & Lydia Bonderer lost 7-9 to Effie Morris &
